Finding a hobby can greatly improve your mental health. A hobby is an activity that you do, that you find meaningful and enjoyable. When we devote time to do these activities that are pleasurable and enjoyable to us, it can significantly help our mental health. According to Utah State University, some mental health benefits of hobbies include reduced stress, enhanced well-being, improved mental health, improved social connection, and decreases in depression and anxiety.
Acrylic Painting as a Hobby
One of my hobbies is acrylic painting! Painting is an activity that I enjoy doing, and it really helps to calm my mind. I tend to paint more aesthetic or cutesy paintings that you would typically find on Pinterest. I search things like “cute acrylic paintings” or “acrylic painting ideas.” Then, I normally choose different suggested terms, such as “cute” or “simple.” In a few of my previous posts, I have shared some of my paintings as ideas to inspire others.
Expressing Yourself Through Acrylic Painting
Acrylic painting, and art in general, is a great way to express your thoughts and emotions. Whether it be through the design, colors, certain shapes, or textures, you are able to express yourself.
This cute smiley face is a very straightforward example of expressing your emotions. It’s very happy, bright, and fun! I also painted it using my favorite colors of pink of purple!
Art Therapy
Art therapy is becoming more popular, which is great! According to Google’s dictionary, art therapy is a “form of psychotherapy involving the encouragement of free self-expression through painting, drawing, or modeling, used as a remedial activity or an aid to diagnosis.” There is a great article The Healing Power of Acrylics: How Art Therapy Can Improve Mental Health that explains how it can help very well. Art therapy “provides individuals with a creative outlet to express themselves and can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.”
I would recommend acrylic painting to anyone trying to find a hobby. Regardless of your skill level, you can still get the amazing benefits!
