Furniture Flips That Make the Most Money

If you’re anything like me, the reason why you got into furniture flipping is to make extra money. Therefore, it is very beneficial to understand the type of furniture flips that make the most money.

Don’t get me wrong– flipping furniture is not strictly about money. There are many people who focus on restoring furniture to their original glory, which typically means spending more time working to bring the piece back to its’ original form and making less money in the process.

My goal is not to destroy high quality furniture pieces by slapping on a coat of paint and calling it a day– and I don’t think this is necessary in order to maximize your profit. However, I do believe that if you are strictly flipping furniture to make money, there are strategies we can implement that speed up the flipping process

1. Research What Sells Fastest In Your Area

If you want to make the most money when flipping furniture, you need to be aware of what sells the fastest in your area. Typically, the fastest-selling furniture is dressers and end tables, however this may vary depending on where you live.

You can typically see what sells the fastest in your area by going on marketplace and seeing the most common listings when searching up “furniture”. If you have experience selling furniture in the past, reflect on what pieces sold the quickest and look for patterns in your audiences’ behavior.

Like I mentioned before, it is pretty common for dressers and end tables to be the most in-demand furniture piece. However, it can also be beneficial to look for where there is a need in your market that is not getting fulfilled by others. If you often get requests for couches, coffee tables, or other types of furniture, consider going outside of your comfort zone and fulfilling that need.

2. Choose Simple Pieces

When searching for pieces to flip, you want to look for furniture that has simple shapes and minimal details. It can take a lot of time to remove the finish between highly-detailed areas regardless if you hand-sand it or use a stripper.

As an example, here are two dressers that I have flipped:

While I prefer the look of the first dresser compared to the second, it took way longer to flip. On average, I made $15 more per hour flipping the second one because it had minimal details and was much easier to sand, which is typically what takes the most time when flipping.

Keep this in mind when searching for a piece to flip: if you want to maximize profit, stay away from pieces with lots of small details.

3. Add Unique Features to Painted Pieces

There’s no doubt that painting furniture is the easiest way to flip a piece quickly. However, if you paint a piece and don’t include any other features, you may not be able to sell the piece for as much money.

One easy way to add character to a piece is to add pole wrap to the drawers. I have done this multiple times, and it has always resulted in more interest in the piece.

While it can be time-consuming to sand furniture down to bare wood, people love to see natural wood in furniture pieces. By keeping parts of the piece wooden, you can typically sell furniture for a higher price than by painting the whole piece.

4. Stage Your Pieces Well

One of the most important parts of furniture flipping in my opinion is to take high quality staging photos. While I understand that not everybody has a good spot to take photos at, adding decor and putting the piece in good lighting can make a big difference.

The main purpose behind taking good photos is to help buyers envision the piece in their home. If you take a photo of your piece with bad lighting and no decorations, it will be hard for people to see the full potential of the piece.

If you don’t have a good place to take staging photos, you can also use AI generated images in your listing. Be sure to label your AI-generated photos as AI and include real-life photos of your piece as well. Be sure to check your AI-generated photo before posting and make sure it doesn’t alter the piece in any way. Below is an example of how AI can put your piece in another environment to help customers envision it in their own home.

Concluding Thoughts

If you have a piece that you believe is valuable, be sure to research the original price of the piece. If you have a rare find on your hands, it may be the most profitable to restore it to its’ original design.

Everybody has their own goals when it comes to flipping furniture. If your goal is to maximize your profit, these tips can help speed up the process and add value to your pieces.
