Are Jean Shorts Actually Hard to Find? How I Shop for Jean Shorts

Jean shorts should be simple… but somehow, they’re one of the hardest things to shop for.

Every year, I’m reminded how weirdly complicated shopping for the right pair of jean shorts is. They’re either too short, too tight in the wrong places, stiff, or just not flattering at all. If you’ve ever tried on five pairs of jean shorts and left with none… you’re not alone.

Why are jean shorts so hard to find?

I didn’t realize how specific my standards were until I actually started paying attention. Most jean shorts don’t meet my expectations in at least one of these areas:

    The fit is off

They’ll fit in the waist but be too tight in the thighs—or fit your legs but gap in the back. It’s rarely both.

    The length is awkward

Some are way too short and feel uncomfortable to wear to class, while others are so long they lose that flattering shape.

    The denim feels wrong

Either super stiff (you can barely sit down) or too thin.

    Trends make it harder

Between ultra-baggy, micro shorts, and “vintage-inspired” everything, it’s hard to find something that actually works for everyday life.

    My perfect pair is..

    The right length

I look for something mid-thigh—not too short where I feel uncomfortable, but not too long that it cuts off my leg in a weird spot. It has to be cute, but I don’t want them riding up every minute.

    A balanced fit

I want them to sit well at my waist without gapping, but still have a slightly relaxed fit through the legs. If they’re too tight, they just aren’t comfortable for walking around all day.

    Comfortable

This is huge. I need denim that feels broken-in or has a little give to it. If I try them on and they feel stiff right away, I know I won’t reach for them.

    Versatile

If I can’t think of at least 3 outfits to wear them with, I don’t buy them. They need to work with the basics I already own.

    Pairs I’m wearing right now

  • Summer Pieces to Splurge on: What I’m Investing In

Summer Pieces to Splurge on: What I’m Investing In

I’m going into this summer a little more intentional about what pieces I’m splurging on—and more importantly, what I’m not. Not every trend is worth the splurge, and I’ve learned that the pieces I come back to year after year are the ones I didn’t hesitate to invest in. So instead of filling my cart with impulse buys, I’m focusing on a lineup of items that actually elevate my wardrobe and earn their place. These are the pieces that, in my opinion, are worth every dollar!

    Linen

Linen is probably the category I’m the most willing to splurge on this summer. It’s one of those fabrics where the quality difference is immediately noticeable—quality linen just feels and looks better, and somehow makes even the simplest outfit look put together! I know I’ll be reaching for linen pieces constantly, whether it’s a matching set or relaxed pants, so this is one area I’m not cheating in. For me, it’s more about having pieces that feel effortless every single time I wear them.

Where I’m looking for linen: Gap, Peppermayo, H&M

    Gap linen set

    Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are a staple, but so hard to find the right pair—which is exactly why I think they’re worth investing in. I’ve found that when the fit is right, you stop searching for a “better pair” every summer. I’m looking for shorts that feel slightly relaxed and that I can style multiple ways without them getting old. This is one of those pieces I’d rather spend a little more on than keep replacing year after year. One of my favorite pairs is from Abercrombie and I just bought another style, so I highly recommend!

Where I’m looking for denim shorts: Abercrombie (duh), Pacsun, Princess Polly

    Abercrombie denim shorts

    Bikinis

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ bikini?! A well-made bikini not only fits better, but it also holds its shape, color, and structure after multiple wears, which makes a huge difference over time. I’ve been a victim of buying several cheap options on Shein, but now I’d rather have a few that I genuinely feel confident in and can mix and match. When I find a style that works, it becomes a go-to every summer, which makes the higher price point feel completely justified.

Where I’m looking for bikinis: Revenge the Label ($30 quality sets), Kulani Kinis, Honey Swim

Kulani Kinis island lush green bikini set

    Dresses

Mini and long dresses are a new piece I want to wear more for summer because they’re essentially a full outfit in one piece, which makes getting dressed so much easier. This is another category where I’m focusing on quality and versatility—styles I can wear casually during the day but also dress up at night. I know I’ll be reaching for dresses a lot for concerts and dinner dates, so it’s important I have a few that I like.

Where I’m looking for dresses: Princess Polly, Cotton On, Blanco by Nature

Princess Polly Swing Mini Dress White

    Sandals

I need a really good pair of sandals or everyday sneakers that can pull everything together and make even the simplest outfit look cute! I’m focusing on styles that are comfortable enough for all-day wear but still feel chic—because if I can wear them constantly and not get blisters, that’s a win.

Where I’m looking for sandals: Free People, Anthropologie

Free People Beach Day Jelly Sandals

At the end of the day, I’m focusing less on how much I’m adding to my wardrobe and more on what actually earns a place in it. These are the pieces I know I’ll wear on repeat—the ones that make getting dressed feel easy, not overwhelming. And for me, that’s always worth the investment.

  • My Take on 2026 Fashion Trends

My Take on 2026 Fashion Trends

Fashion trends change constantly, and every year there seems to be a new set of “must-have” pieces. Instead of trying to follow everything, I like to look at trends as inspiration and pick the ones that actually fit my personal style. Here are some of the 2026 trends I’ve noticed and my thoughts on them.

    I’m Loving…

    Elevated Athleisure

Making comfort seem more sleek? YES I love. I feel like you can mix and match so many different styles of athletic wear and make it feel put together this year. Matching sets, nicer fabrics, bright colors- wearing workout clothes has become a whole new style itself! I think this trend is so easy to follow because you can stay comfortable while looking put together.

    Fun Jackets

I need to buy more fun jackets because I would love to participate in this trend. It gives a statement to the outfit and something to catch people’s eye! You can experiment with texture, color, and patterns to play around with your look. The options are really endless when it comes to jackets- there’s one out there that complements everyone differently. And if you live somewhere cold like me, it’s just a way to look cute while staying warm!

    Hair Accessories

I feel like I see a new hair accessory I want to try every time I’m on TikTok! These can easily show your personality and be a fun way to spice up a casual look. Claw clips, big scrunchies, hair scarves, headbands- they’re all small styling details that make your look that much better. I think this trend is so cute because everyone gets very creative with how they style their hair, and I might need to get some of my own headbands.

    Trends That Feel Fresh…

    Stripes

These have always been a popular trend, but stripes are popping up in new ways this year, I feel like. It’s such a timeless pattern, but now we have thin stripes, bold stripes, and stripes in different colors. Personally, I love the two-color pieces where the shirt is one color and the stripes another. Such a cute way to add colors to your look!

    Mock Necks/High Neck Sweatshirts

One of my favorite trends so far this year! The high-neck sweatshirts and shirts make me feel so cozy while looking sleek. This is part of the elevated athleisure too- it just makes you feel like a comfy sweatshirt upgrades the outfit.

    Screenshot

    Barrel/Bubble Pants

I’m a little on the fence about this one- I think I have to try it myself before I make any firm opinions. But, they seem to look good on influencers and shoppers on TikTok, I just don’t know if they fit every body type. The pants have a distinct structure to them that might look different on some people, which is why I’m a little nervous to try them. I don’t know if I could pull them off, but the colors of some bubble pants from Free People are so cute! Overall, I think I could get down with this trend if I styled it right.

2026 trends seem to be a mix of comfort, statement pieces, and playful details. While not every trend will stick long-term, experimenting with a few new ideas can keep your style feeling fresh. Which trend are you most excited about this year?

  • Spring Outfit Color Combinations I’m Wearing this Season

Spring Outfit Color Combinations I’m Wearing this Season

As the weather starts warming up, I always find myself wanting to refresh my outfits. Spring and summer feel like the perfect time to experiment with new color combinations while still keeping outfits simple and wearable!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how color can make even the most basic outfit feel cute! Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe, pairing colors differently can completely change the look of pieces you already own. These are a few color combinations I want to start wearing more this upcoming season because they feel fresh, easy to style, and perfect for everyday outfits.

    Navy + Cream

This feels so clean and effortless- navy pieces paired with flowy cream pants create a relaxed look that still feels put together. An easy way I want to wear this combo is with linen cream bottoms, a navy sweater or cardigan, and neutral flip flops. Easy to throw on for a casual dinner or on a vacation!

    Red + Denim

Red is a color I don’t wear all the time, but when I do, I love pairing it with denim. Denim helps balance out the boldness of red and makes the outfit feel more casual- and full of personality! I love the idea of a red tank with classic dark wash jeans. Bold but still simple!

    Soft Yellow + Blue

The perfect spring combination! Yellow adds warmth to so many outfits and highlights my tan throughout the summer! A butter yellow cardigan with baby blue bottoms, or even switched- a blue top with yellow flowy bottoms- would be so cute!

    Forest Green + Brown

Deep green pairs so well with warm brown tones! Even though both colors are darker, they can still work well when styled with lighter accessories or on those rainy, spring days. I want to try this combo with a dark green top and an accessory like a purse or brown sneakers!

Sometimes all it takes is pairing colors differently to make everyday basics feel new again. I’ve realized I tend to stick to the same safe colors, so this spring I want to step outside my comfort zone a little more and challenge my style! These are a few color combinations I’m excited to start wearing more this season, and I’m looking forward to finding new ways to style them with pieces already in my closet. What color combinations do you wear most often?

  • Trendy vs Timeless: How I Decide What to Buy

Trendy vs Timeless: How I Decide What to Buy

Every season, there’s a new must-have item. It’s all over TikTok. Everyone is wearing it. Suddenly, I’m wondering if I should buy it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love and follow trends. But I can’t participate in all of them. Over time, I’ve created a simple way to decide what trends fit into my style- and what I should skip. A balance between timeless and trendy pieces is something I’m working on!

    What’s “trendy”?

Trendy to me means some items might be social media-driven- they get a lot of attention and circulate quickly between platforms. I also think of statement-focused pieces or bold items, like rare patterns or accessories. A fun or experimental aspect is a part of trends as well.

    What’s “timeless”?

When I say timeless, I mean neutral base pieces that you can pair with most outfits. Things you can rewear constantly and that serve multiple purposes are highly valuable. Timeless pieces also have to align with my overall aesthetic, since these are the foundation of my closet.

    What I think about

Before I buy something, I have to think about a few questions to decide if it’s right for me. I ask myself:

    Does it fit my style?

If I took away social media, would I still like this? Does it feel like me?

Can I style it 3 different ways?

Is it versatile? If I can’t, it’s probably trend-only or I don’t have the items to pair with it yet.

Is this replacing something or just adding clutter?

Is this something different from what I already have? Does this elevate my closet?

If I find myself saying “no” or “it adds clutter”, then I have to step back and rethink buying the item. This structure I give myself saves me money and ensures I like all the items in my closet!

    What I buy trendy

    Trendy

    Accessories

    Shoes

    Seasonal pieces

    Patterns

I like to sprinkle in fun accessories and shoes once in a while! They usually aren’t the center of an outfit- but they could be! Seasonal pieces like pastel linen tops for summer or holiday items are also things I like to buy, so I can look forward to dressing for each season! My red chunky sweater or the peach knit top I have are waiting for their moment to shine!

    What I buy timeless

    Denim

    Basic tees/tanks

    Sweaters

I buy my denim from a select few places and STICK WITH IT. Denim is always going to do it for me, so I like to splurge on all things denim because it pairs with everything. Basic tees, tanks, and sweaters are perfect for layering and matching with different outfits too, making them always in style.

I love participating in trends, but style is built with intention. I don’t want a closet that only looks like everyone’s saved posts – I want one that feels like me! Having a balance of trendy and timeless pieces helps me dress authentically and confidently.

  • 6 Outfit Formulas I Use for Everyday Style

6 Outfit Formulas I Use for Everyday Style

    Building Consistency

A lot of days, I stare at my closet and feel like I don’t have anything good to wear. I’m starting to realize the problem is not that I don’t have clothes, it’s that I don’t use easy outfit formulas. Repeatable outfit ideas make getting dressed easier, faster, and more consistent. I’ll share some outfit formulas I’m learning to rely on each week.

Basic Tee + Jeans + Clogs

Who doesn’t have a plain t- shirt and jeans? These pieces are easy to throw on and look coordinated for almost any occasion. I think clogs give a casual look to the outfit, especially in fall, but sneakers could also be a good touch. I wear this outfit when I get coffee or go shopping so I can feel confident and put together. Some other ways to tweak this outfit could be adding a tote bag, sunglasses, or a fun hairstyle to make the look more interesting. This simple formula always lands.

    Pinterest

Oversized Sweatshirt + Athletic Bottoms + Sneakers

Comfortable and sleek – An oversized top and tight bottoms like biker shorts or leggings create a perfect outfit for running errands, class, or a workout. Coordinating colors or adding crew socks can also give the impression that this outfit took a lot of effort- even if it was your lazy day! Looking cute doesn’t have to be so hard.

    Pinterest

Tank + Cardigan + Relaxed Pants

This formula combines loose bottoms and a fitted base, creating layers for you to work with. Cardigans give you a wide range of ways to wear your look. You could leave your cardigan unbuttoned as a jacket, buttoned with the tank peeking out, or buttoned at the top to see all pieces. Relaxed pants like linens or soft cotton can be a good switch-up from jeans when you want to feel more comfy as well. This look is best for days walking downtown or a casual lunch.

    Pinterest

    Neutrals + Statement Accessory

This outfit style takes minimal effort but still makes you look elevated. A plain outfit with a statement accessory gives your look a focal point and something for people to compliment you on! Accessories are one thing that says a lot about a person, so pieces like a bright bag, funky shoes, or just an interesting pattern show people a glimpse into your personality – what I’m trying to do with my style!

    Pinterest

    Matching Set + Jewelry

Matching patterns or colors automatically gives people the impression that you are intentional with your look. Having cohesive pieces that fit together makes you powerful! A sleek hairstyle and bold jewelry can level up the outfit too. For me, having matching sets makes my life easier because they are already made for each other- I don’t have to overthink if it’s the same color shade or if they belong together. I can easily throw a set on if I’m rushing in the morning or have a travel day.

    Pinterest

    Striped Top + Baggy Jeans

These two are classics! A striped long sleeve paired with relaxed denim is one of those combinations that feels balanced — structured on top, effortless on the bottom. It’s just enough to feel cute but not over-the-top for a casual outfit. I’m looking to add more stripes to my closet so I can recreate this formula more often!

    Pinterest

    Now Make It Yours

All of these formulas have 3 things in common- a simple base, a balancing element, and an easy-to-repeat structure. You can take basics in your closet and pair them with different materials, colors, and accessories to make your look feel natural, not forced. Now, you and I don’t have to think so hard in the mornings! I know I’ll be referencing these formulas as I dive more into my style! What outfit formulas do you use most?

  • Get to Know Me!

    Get to Know Me!

    Welcome to my blog!

My name is Audrey, and I am a 20-year-old college student at the University of Northern Iowa, studying Marketing and Advertising. My goal is to work in the creative field after graduation, and I’m excited to build a community here and on my social media platforms.

I started this brand as a space to document my journey of building a personal style that feels simple, authentic, and intentional. I’ve always loved fashion and following trends, but I didn’t always know how to make it feel like me. I would buy pieces I liked individually, but they didn’t always work together. I lacked feeling put together and confident, but I didn’t want to feel like I was trying too hard.

I hope to focus on clothing basics, trends, and outfits that work for my real life- making styling feel less intimidating. Currently, I wear a lot of neutrals, but I have a few pops of color in my closet!

This blog isn’t about having it all figured out or being an expert- I’m not! It’s about learning what works, experimenting with trends, and finding confidence in my look.

I want this to become a community centered around intentional style and making getting dressed feel easier! I’m still figuring it out, and I’m excited to do it here! If you’re on a journey building your closet too, I hope you’ll follow along. Let’s find our way together!

    Welcome to Audrey All Dressed!
