How to Make Lasting Embrodiery Designs on Clothing and Shoes

When you are making a design on clothing, and you want it to last while also being able to wear it, you might have some questions on how to make sure it stays secure. It is not talked about enough, but there are tips and tricks when adding a design to clothing. They are needed more when adding to designs you will wear instead of designs you will display, because when you wear the clothing, you can put strain on the design, especially shoes, because your foot would rub on the inside constantly. Below, I answer some questions I had when I started putting embroidery on my clothes and shoes.

Can you wash/ dry it?

Yes, but you have to be careful

How to wash/dry it

  • Turn clothing inside out
  • cold/ gentle cycle
  • Air dry

When making the design tips

  • Use a good thread
  • Stitch close to the fabric
  • Fabric stabilizer – I use a WASH-AWAY stabilizer (Image below)
  • Thicker fabric holds the design better (sweatshirts, thicker shirts, denim)

How to make it last on shoes

  • Canvas, denim, or fabric sneakers work best
  • Use the flat part of the shoes
  • Use a stronger thread (polyester or nylon)
  • Like on clothing, use tight stitches here as well
  • Double-stitch key areas
  • Use a stabilizer
  • On the inside, use a thin layer of fabric glue
  • Or fabric sealant spray (inside and outside)
  • Use a fabric waterproof spray on the outside to help prevent damage
  • Hand clean only
  • Air dry only

Here are some shoes that I did. I didn’t have to worry about securing the design because I wasn’t going to wear them much since they were also painted. I hope I answered some of the questions you might have had about adding a design to clothes and shoes! If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me or ask right here on the questions page. Enjoying stitching!
