Ranking the Last 10 National Champions

Luke Goedken

10.) 2014 Uconn Huskies 32-8

One of the best championship runs you will find. Uconn was a 7 seed entering the tournament. However, they did not have it easy. They beat a 2, 3, 4, and 1 seed to get to the national championship game. This was a Shabazz Napier master class of a tournament. One of the best cinderella stories in all of college basketball history. This team just does not compare to the teams in from of them. One of my favorite teams of all time.

9.) 2022 Kansas Jayhawks 24-6

While this team was great, it may have had one of the easier runs to the national championship, not their fault but still. Beating a number 7 seed Miami in the elite 8, a Villanova team without Justin Moore in the final four, and a number 8 seed UNC in the title game who missed the tournament with the same roster the next season. Bill Self deserved another national title after their 2020 Kansas team didn’t get to play in the NCAA tournament due to covid. This one is for 2020 Kansas Jayhawks.

8.) 2017 North Carolina Tar Heels 33-7

A revenge season for the Tar Heels made this run so sweet. After losing to Villanova the previous year they returned a lot. Led by Justin Jackson and Joel Berry this team just didn’t dominate like the teams in front of them. However, they still are national champions. This was also Roy Williams last run at a national championship. This one was for Marcus Paige.

7.) 2023 Uconn Huskies 31-8

Similar to their most recent title run this team dominated and covered every spread to get win the title. The difference is their regular season was not as good. Uconn was a 4 seed entering the tournament, where as a lot of these other teams were 1 and 2s. However, I think you can lump this team in with 2024 and it is the greatest 2 year run of all time. They won 12 straight tournament games by more than 13!

6.) 2019 Virginia Cavaliers 35-3

One of the greatest stories on college basketball history. Virginia is the first ever number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament to lose to a 16 seed. They then responded from that loss with a national championship. Led by guys like Kyle Guy, Deandre Hunter, and Ty Jerome this team had a lot of things bounce their way. Beating Purdue in the elite 8 on a buzzer beater from Mamadi Diakite. Then in the final four a few controversial calls with Ty Jerome allegedly double dribbling, and Kyle Guy getting fouled on a corner 3 and going on to make all 3 free throws to tie the game with no time left. Finally, the championship game that went to overtime vs. Texas Tech which they were able to pull out. This team was special and their entire story is must watch TV.

5.) 2015 Duke Ble Devils 35-4

In what would be coach Ks last championship run this team was very young. They were led by 3 freshman Jahlil Okafor, Justice Winslow, Tyus Jones, and senior guard Quinn Cook. They beat Wisconsin in the championship who previously beat undefeated Kentucky in the final four.

4.) 2016 Villanova Wildcats 35-5

This Villanova team ran through the tournament even easier than 2018. Their average win margin was 20.8 including a 44 point win in the final four vs. Buddy Hield and Oklahoma. They had the iconic Kris Jenkins buzzer beater to win the national championship vs. North Carolina. They were top 5 in both offense and defense this year. Led by players such as Josh Hart, Ryan Archidiacono, Jalen Brunson, Daniel Ochefu, and many others from the 2018 national championship team.

3.) 2021 Baylor Bears 28-2

This Baylor team may have had the best backcourt I have ever seen in college basketball. It was made up of 3 guys Jared Butler, Davion Mitchell, and Macio Teague. All guys that could defend, score, and shoot. Their only two losses all season came to Kansas on the road after a covid break and to Oklahoma State in the conference tournament. Both teams which made the NCAA tournament. Their average margin of victory in the NCAA tournament was 15.3 and they defeated the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs in the championship game.

2.) 2018 Villanova Wildcats 36-4

Villanova won every game in the NCAA tournament by an average of 17.6 points. The roster consisted of national player of the year Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo, Omari Spellman, Eric Paschal, Phil Booth, and a young Collin Gillespie. This was their second title in 3 years with many of the same players. What separates this team from the first title is all the guys are older and better. They were top 2 in offense over all 10 of the teams on this list, it was just beautiful basketball all around.

1.) 2024 Uconn Huskies 37-3

This team dominated from the moment their conference tournament started. They ran through it and won the Big East tournament without even playing their best basketball. They get to the tournament as the number 1 overall seed looking to be the first ever back-to-back national champions since Florida in 2007. Well, they did just that and more. In the round of 64 to the elite 8 they went up at least 30 in each and every game. Fast forward they beat an Alabama team in the final four who shot 44.8% from the field and 47.8& from 3, they beat them 86-72. In the national championship game vs. the best player in the country, Zach Edey, they won 75-60. Uconn covered every spread in their back-to-back championship run. We have never seen such dominance in todays game of college basketball.
