Sauna, Sea, & Scandinavia: Norway’s Hottest and Coolest Tradition

From Miami to Norway: Our First Taste of Sauna Culture

Last August, we traveled to Norway to visit friends we had met a few months earlier in Miami through the National Student Exchange program. Our first stop was Kristiansand, where one of our Norwegian friends lives. On our second day there, he mentioned that he had booked a Norwegian sauna experience for all of us. Initially, we were a bit puzzled—why had we traveled over 4,000 miles just to sit in a sauna?

However, when we arrived, it quickly became clear that this was no ordinary sauna. This one was floating on a platform in the ocean. The Norwegian sauna experience turned out to be much more than we had imagined. It was an unforgettable combination of relaxation, physical benefits, and beautiful surroundings.

How the Sauna Experience Works

We had the sauna reserved for about an hour. Upon entering, we were instructed to wear wool hats to protect our hair from the heat. After just ten minutes inside, we were all sweating profusely. So, what was the solution? You open the door, walk around to the back of the platform, and jump into the icy-cold ocean. The water was shockingly cold, but incredibly refreshing. We repeated the process four or five times, alternating between the sauna and the cold plunge, until our hour was up.

This was an incredibly fun experience for us—one that not only allowed us to stay active, but also provided an opportunity to bond with friends. Our Norwegian friends told us that this was a routine activity for their group, typically done about twice a week. What surprised us even more was that people of all ages participated in the tradition. The sauna was almost always fully booked, with a waiting list for spots. It’s clear that this experience is more than just a wellness ritual—it’s an essential part of their culture and daily life. For us, as Iowans, it was something we could never experience at home.

The Health Benefits of Saunas and Cold Plunges

Overall, it was a truly special experience that reflected a core aspect of Norwegian culture. Saunas like this one are found in several cities across the country. Known for their ability to relax, detoxify, and reduce inflammation, saunas provide numerous health benefits. Adding a cold plunge after the sauna creates a perfect balance—improving circulation, enhancing muscle recovery, and boosting metabolism. The combination offers double the benefits, making it an ideal way to take care of both mind and body.
