If you’ve ever wanted a workout that leaves you breathless in more ways than one, let us introduce you to the 450-foot drop at Sleeping Bear Dunes. It’s part heart-pounding sweat session, part jaw-dropping natural wonder, and 100% worth the leg burn.
A Family Tradition in Michigan
Lani has spent her entire life coming to her lake home in Michigan, and this steep dune workout at Sleeping Bear Dunes is a family tradition. Every year, they take on the challenge—because nothing says “vacation” like willingly putting your legs through total exhaustion. Most visitors admire the stunning view from the top, snapping photos from the designated lookout area while watching others brave the climb. But for those who dare to go down, the real adventure begins.

Descending takes about two minutes of pure fun—sprinting, sliding, or cautiously stepping your way down the shifting sand. But the return trip? That’s a different story. Climbing back up can take anywhere from seven minutes (if you’re a beast) to three hours (if you’ve severely underestimated the challenge). Tourists are strongly advised not to go down unless they’re ready for the brutal ascent, because the only way out—aside from your own two legs—is a $3,000 helicopter rescue. No pressure.
At the bottom, most people cool off with a swim in Lake Michigan or take a moment to enjoy the peaceful shoreline. But once it’s time to face the climb, there’s no turning back. Lani and her crew like to time themselves, racing against the clock—and each other—for bragging rights. With years of practice, she can power up in about 15-20 minutes, but every step is a battle.
The Climb: A Full-Body Challenge
The first few strides feel manageable, but soon enough, the sand fights back. Your legs burn, your breath shortens, and suddenly, walking turns into crawling—literally. You dig in with both hands and feet, bear-crawling your way up (fitting, right?). It’s an all-out, full-body grind that makes you question your life choices and your fitness level.
But when you finally reach the top, sweaty and victorious, looking out over the endless blue of Lake Michigan, you realize—it’s one of the most rewarding workouts out there. A challenge, a tradition, and an unforgettable way to move your body in one of Michigan’s most beautiful places.
