Desert Heat? No Problem. Hike Arizona’s Coolest Trails

The Challenge of Camelback Mountain

Arizona is known for more than just its desert heat. It also boasts stunning desert mountains. Camelback Mountain, named for its camel-like shape, is one of the state’s most popular destinations. From the summit, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the Phoenix Valley, surrounding desert mountains, landmarks, and the city skyline.

Camelback Mountain has two challenging trails: Cholla Trail and Echo Canyon Trail. These trails climb 1,420 feet over a 2.6-mile path. The hike typically takes 2 to 3 hours round-trip. The first part is easier, but the terrain becomes more difficult after that, requiring some climbing over rocks. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with stunning views of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the surrounding desert.

Ali’s Close Call

Ali and her family have visited Arizona many times but had never hiked Camelback Mountain. After so many trips, they decided it was time to finally give it a go.

The hike to the summit was challenging, especially with the desert heat they hadn’t fully anticipated. But when they reached the top, the fresh air and breathtaking views of the desert made the effort worth it.

The descent, however, proved to be tricky. There was one section of the trail that was very narrow, requiring hikers to take turns when going up or down. Ali’s group of eight was making their way down, and it was her turn to go after one of their friends had made it safely down.

The path here was quite narrow, about the width of a shoe, and covered in loose gravel. As Ali stepped forward, her foot slipped on the gravel, and she started to go off the edge of the mountain. She remembers looking down and seeing half of her body hanging off the mountain. Luckily, there was a branch sticking out from the side, and she managed to grab it in time, pulling herself and feet back onto the mountain. Everyone watching started to scream as they thought she was not going to be able to grab the branch.

Even though Ali made it down the rest of the mountain safely, she probably will not be hiking Camelback Mountain again due to her near-death experience. Ali does recommend the hike to others but makes sure to wear proper hiking shoes with excellent traction.
