As Iowa girls, we know summers are fleeting—but we make the most of them! Luckily, Iowa is home to one of the bluest lakes in the world: Lake Okoboji.
Often called the “Hamptons of the Midwest,” Lake Okoboji is a stunning glacier made lake in Northwest Iowa. Ali has spent every summer here at her lake house and in August 2024, she hosted Lani and her family for an unforgettable weekend at the lake.
Despite its small-town charm, Okoboji is a hidden gem packed with activities—especially for those who love to stay active. Whether you’re into boating, swimming, sand volleyball, skiing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, running, biking, or golfing, this place has it all. Beyond the adventure, it boasts a breathtaking landscape and a one-of-a-kind community vibe.
But what truly sets Okoboji apart? The University of Okoboji Summer Games.
Every July, this epic weekend event—hosted by Okoboji’s iconic store, The Three Sons (operating since 1960)—brings together athletes and adventurers alike. Fun fact: The “University of Okoboji” isn’t a real school! It’s a long-running inside joke among locals, capturing the carefree, summer-camp-meets-college-town spirit of the area. Their mascot? The Phantoms.

Events at the University of Okoboji Summer Games:
🏃♀️ 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon—winding through scenic trails and finishing on the lively downtown lake boardwalk
🏊♂️ Individual Triathlon
🏅 Team Triathlon
And the best part? After all that action, everyone jumps into the lake to cool off!
After a morning of movement, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind. Catch a concert from a big-name artist, enjoy a waterfront dinner at one of the area’s amazing restaurants, or hit up Arnolds Park Amusement Park for classic summer thrills.
We weren’t kidding when we said Okoboji has something for everyone. It’s small yet iconic, vibrant yet laid-back—a place that feels like home, even if it’s your first time visiting.
