Hydrangea is the flower of the week! I love this flower; both as a fresh flower and as a plant you can find planted outside! If you see my image on my homepage, those are some beautiful hydrangeas in Wisconsin! Hydrangeas can be really touchy and dramatic but don’t give up on them! Read down below for some care tips and fun facts!
Care Tips:
- Find a clean vase and fill it with cool water right after cutting the stems at an angle.
- Remove the lower leaves on the hydrangea’s stem, but not all of them. They usually take the nutrients away from the bloom.
- Change the water and cut the stems every couple days to keep them fresh.
- Keep your hydrangeas out of direct sunlight and away from heaters.
Bonus: It may sound a little weird but if the hydrangea starts to look droopy, soak the whole head in cool water for 20-30 minutes. This will help them rehydrate!
Fun Facts:
- Some hydrangeas can change color based on the pH of the soil! They tend to turn pink in alkaline soil and blue in acidic soil.
- Fossils indicate that hydrangeas have existed for over 45 million years!
- If you love hydrangeas, they have their own holiday! Hydrangea Day is on January 5th!
- Most hydrangeas lack a strong smell. They can be great for people that are sensitive to strong fragrances.
- Planted hydrangeas have a long life-span if they are well cared for! Some can live for up to 50 years!
- Each color of hydrangea has a different meaning including the following: blue – understanding, gratitude, white – purity, grace, pink – romance.
Here’s a reminder that hydrangeas are toxic to pets so be sure to keep an eye on your pets if you want to enjoy some!
