Starting out as a beginner in Escape from Tarkov can feel like being thrown into the deep end of a very hostile pool. With brutal combat, complex systems, and zero hand-holding, it’s a game that demands patience and perseverance. But once you learn the basics, Tarkov becomes one of the most rewarding experiences in gaming. Here’s a survival-focused guide to help beginners find their footing.

1. Focus on Early Quests
One of the best ways to level up early and unlock traders is by prioritizing beginner quests—especially from Prapor, Therapist, and Jaeger.
- Start with Debut (Prapor) and Shortage (Therapist) as soon as possible.
- Completing Introduction will unlock Jaeger, who offers valuable barter options and gear.
These quests not only give XP but also unlock key items and expand your flea market access later on.
2. Build Budget Kits
You don’t need expensive gear to survive or progress. Early on, and as a beginner, budget loadouts help you learn the game without risking a fortune.
- I typically use cheap shotgun builds or bolt action rifles like the VPO-215 Gornostay depending on the map I’m playing. Using cheap ammo is ok, since it’s a budget loadout, just make sure to aim for the head if you have to fight someone.
- Cheap armor like the PACA or 6B2, and helmets like Kolpak or SHPM, can save your life without breaking the bank.
- Always bring meds: at minimum, an AI-2, bandage, and painkillers.
Play with the mindset that everything you bring in might be lost—but that every successful extract is pure gain.
3. Master a Few Maps
Don’t spread yourself thin. Instead, pick one or two maps and learn them deeply. Customs is a great starting map because it’s tied to early quests and has accessible loot. Learn extract points, loot spawns, and high-traffic areas so you can avoid unnecessary fights.
Use Scav runs to scout areas and practice navigating without risk.
4. Avoid Unnecessary Fights
The best players know when not to fight. If you hear movement and your mission is complete, extract. Killing isn’t required to succeed in Tarkov. Survival and task progression should be your main goals as a beginner. As a solo player it is also important to observe enemies prior to engaging if possible. Many players loot in groups and if there are too many it’s often best to lay low while they pass.
5. Learn from Death
You’ll die—a lot. But each death is a lesson. Use offline mode to practice without risk, watch YouTubers or streamers to study tactics, and most importantly, keep playing.
Tarkov isn’t about being the best shot, it’s about being the smartest survivor.
