Understanding PR: What You Need to Know

By Evelyn Torres

Thinking About Majoring in Public Relations?

There are countless majors and careers out there that you may not even know exist, and it can feel overwhelming. But if you love writing, creating, or being involved in business, public relations (PR) might be the perfect fit for you!

What is Public Relations?

Public relations is all about creating a positive relationship with key stakeholders by influencing and engaging with them. According to the Public Relations Society of America, PR professionals use various platforms to shape and frame the public perception of their organization. Essentially, you must communicate with the public and build a positive reputation for the organization you work for.

What are Some Everyday Examples?

One example you might be familiar with is the concept of PR packages. These are products or information that companies send to influencers or journalists, allowing them to create content about the company and its offerings.

Influencers might make unboxing videos showcasing the products or provide reviews for their audience. This not only gives the company free publicity but also helps to establish a relationship with different audiences.

PR professionals have many creative ways to connect with their intended audiences, making the field versatile and exciting to work in. Whether it’s through PR packages, media relations, social media engagement, or event planning, there are countless opportunities to make an impact.

What is it like being Public Relations Major?

When I started college, I had no idea what I wanted to major in, but I did know what I liked and disliked. I had always enjoyed writing, but I didn’t want to be a journalist. I also wanted to be part of the business world but wasn’t sure where I fit in. Lucky for me, PR was the perfect blend of both interests. Each major varies slightly between universities so in my university PR major belongs to the communication and media department, so I had to take some core communication courses as part of my major. As for the rest of my classes I took a few PR specific courses, digital media courses, and some business courses like marketing. Many of these class assignments were writing-intensive and project-based. These assignments and projects included interviewing, writing, editing, recording, photography, and creating campaigns.
