For my last post, I wanted to do another podcast episode reflection. This will expand a little bit more on something I mentioned in my last post. I have thought about this topic often and was glad to find an episode that discussed it more in-depth. So, according to this episode, how do these two topics intersect? The episode began by talking about how musical skill in worship is discussed in the Bible. Skilled artists were hired to help build the original Temple building, and musicians featured prominently in many Biblical stories. The God of the Universe is worthy of the best artwork and music we can create. Our worship should focus on creating something valuable to give back to God for creating everything and sacrificing Himself for us. At the end of the day, our skills and talents ultimately came from Him.
How do we develop our skills?
Our artistic skills do not improve if we do not practice (as any artist will tell you). Practice time can also be a form of sacrifice/worship to God, since it means we are improving on the talents He gave us. High skill level also can open doors for more opportunities for artists to serve both God and others. One analogy that the podcast used was: if you were called to play your instrument for the Presidential inauguration or a king’s coronation, you would practice for hours every day beforehand. How much more should we practice our art if we’re creating art for God?
How do we balance skills and our heart posture?
God wants us to be skilled in our craft to worship Him better. But what about our heart and mindset when we come to worship Him? God also wants us to be focused on submitting to His will and ensuring that we make the focus of our worship to be on Him. The lyrics of many modern worship songs seem to focus more on what God can do for us than on what we can do to serve Him better, unfortunately.
Conclusion
I enjoyed listening to this episode and sharing my thoughts with everyone. I have loved sharing my thoughts with everyone on this blog and I hope to do more in the future. See you all later!
