Why Everyone Needs a Running Buddy

Why a Running Buddy?

It is under common belief that running it suited as a solo sport. However, the way I see it, is that the right running partner can push you even further to accomplish your running goals. Whether it is once a week, or every day, having a running buddy can make running more fun and seem like less of a chore. Throughout this post, I am going to explain why having a running companion can be beneficial and how to find one!

Benefits

Connection: Many runners find running enjoyable because of the shared connection it can provide. Having someone to chat and share your thoughts with during a workout can provide extra social opportunities. When you are working toward similar goals with someone you automatically build a strong connection. This connection can offer both physical and emotional support by cheering each other on, celebrating milestones, and showing up for each other in the tough moments.

Accountability: Having someone count on you, makes it harder to skip a workout. I will be honest, there are phases sometimes where it is hard for me to be consistent. However, when I have set plans with someone I will not bail because I value commitment. Runners are more likely to stay consistent with their goals with a partner. Furthermore, this is especially true when unfavorable circumstances arise such as bad weather, fatigue, irregular schedule, and distractions. A quick phone call or text to set up a time can get you motivated right away.

How to Keep the Run Fun

It is important to add variety to the runs so boredom does not set in. I like to run new routes with my buddy to have new talking points on the run. Also, my partner and I like to set challenges to complete during our runs (ex. who can get to a certain point faster, ispy, guess the car). Additionally, by going on alternative routes I meet more people and see familiar faces.

Tips for Finding the Right Buddy

Find someone who you may already know or see often. This can indicate that you both are available at the same times and would not have the burden of breaking the ice socially. Communicate early on goals and expectations because not everyone has the same fitness dreams. Some concepts you should agree with is frequency of workouts, pace, and what you both hope to gain from each other. You do not want to hold someone back, and vice versa. It is important to be flexible with each other, give grace, and be a support system for one another.

Run, Inspire, Grow

Having a running buddy is about building a committed partnership to hold people accountable. Again, whether you are working towards a race, trying for a personal best, or just enjoying the open road, a buddy can make all the difference. Do you have a running buddy?

Having someone to challenge you in a fun way, and that is driving towards similar goals, can definitely be motivating.
