Having the correct focus on your images and videos is key. The quality will be quite lower without being in focus when needed. Especially when you are on paid photoshoots, your subject will want to be in focus rather than the background. In order to do so you need to understand focus modes and areas, today I will be talking about Sony, but is similar on other cameras.

Wide
This area is when you have subjects that may move all across your screen.
Zone
Zone is mainly used for fixed subjects. There are 9 different zones across your screen and you manually have to select which zone.
Center Fix
This is used for when your subjects will always be in the center of your screen, therefor you wont have to change which zone or try and have the camera find what your trying to focus in on.
Spot/Expanded Spot
This area you can select small, medium, or large spots, then you can freely move these spots all over your screen where ever you would like to focus.
Tracking
This mode is for when you have moving subjects moving all over unpredictably. The camera will find the subject and track it to where ever it goes within frame. In order to use this mode it needs to be set to, AF-C which is continuous auto focus.
