Jackie Pelland

Jackie Pelland, a partner at Slingshot25, presented at the Iowa SHRM State Conference 2024. She discussed the topic, “Lead So Others Will – WANT TO – Follow”.
As Pelland explains, “All leaders have one thing in common… followers.” It is important to lead in a way that not only attracts followers, but also keeps followers. However, as Pelland communicated further, it needs to be clear that there is no such thing as a correct leadership style. “Nobody actually knows what it takes to be a good leader… It is a blackbox… There is no study…” Pelland clarifies that every situation is different, and the leadership style should reflect the situation. In addition to the situation, leadership styles shift in regard to the personalities leaders are dealing with.
Theory of Complexity
Pelland’s breakout session at the Iowa SHRM State Conference included a discussion on the four levels of complexity.
1. Simple Level of Complexity
This theory of complexity means “we figured it out”. It is a complexity that is highly repetitive and well-known, to the point where we establish a way to move past the problem – and create a fix.
“The domain of administration.”
2. Complicated Level of Complexity
Taking it a step further, this level of complexity involves an “experimentation to find pattern”. Individuals need to dig deeper in this level.
“The domain of professional expertise.”
3. Complex Level of Complexity
This is the theory of complexity where “problems require humility to accept”. There will be times when leaders need to step outside of their comfort zone – and take the long road – to help shape complicated situations.
“The domain of leadership.”
4. Chaos Level of Complexity
This level of complexity reveals an “outcome that is never predictable or explainable”. However, it is important that individuals stay strong and continue to fight their battles while enduring all sorts of hardship.
“The domain of survival.”
Leadership Myths
Digging further into Pelland’s presentation – she brings the following myths to perspective:
“Leaders Are Tough”
“Leaders Should Always Add Value”
“Leaders Need More and Better Tactics”
The reality of the situation is that leaders run into tough situations. However, they will not have all of the answers. They will go through humility at times. The importance that holds true for all leaders is that they need to remain humble. They must think about their followers, and less about themselves. Companies need leaders who are “more Yoda, and less Superman”. They need individual’s who have more wisdom and are willing to look for the power in their teammates, rather than individuals who have all of the answers. Pelland added, companies need “leaders who think differently” – where they focus on the person, rather than the problem. In other words, leaders need to stop taking the time to “add their two cents”, and instead, support their employees and what they bring to the table.
