Tammera Rogers

Iowa SHRM State Conference 2024 - Tammera Rogers

Tammera (Tammy) Rogers, the founder and CEO of the BecomeMore Group, presented at the Iowa SHRM State Conference 2024. She introduced the topic of organizational strategies. According to Rogers, there are seven strategies to follow.

Organizational Strategy #1

“Get the RIGHT people in the RIGHT seats”

As we all know, everyone within this world is different from one another. There are differences in hair colors, family history, personalities, and even their leadership styles. Leaders have different experiences and viewpoints on how to plan, how to follow the rules, and how to lead in general.

Some people believe in using rules as suggestions. They like to push boundaries and “push the status quo,” as Rogers explained. Because everyone brings different strengths to the table, it is important to put them in a position where they will succeed.

Your company might have some tremendous individuals, but it is important to make sure their key attributes are being placed in the most beneficial setting.

Organizational Strategy #2

“Acknowledge how EACH individual ADDS VALUE”

As explained in the first organizational strategy, everyone is different. Therefore, if you treat everyone the same, you are, in Rogers words, “perpetuating the veneer.”

When leaders understand each individual they oversee, they can help place them in a spot to accomplish greatness. So many people have differing strengths, which is what contributes to the success that businesses undergo.

Organizational Strategy #3

“INVEST in STAFF Growth”

Rogers claims, “success happens outside of your comfort zone.” Success is not about following others who have received successful results, but it is about trying to push yourself even further to go beyond previous success.

Rogers says it best, “It is not about a right answer, it is about a journey.” Failure is bound to happen. You need to understand that growth cannot occur, if you do not take risks and learn from your mistakes. If everyone played it safe all of the time, there would be no greatness.

Allow your team members to try new things and pick them back up if they fail. You have no idea what they might be capable of achieving for your company one day.

Organizational Strategy #4

“Insist on RADICAL TRUTH TELLING”

Being truthful towards ourselves and the individuals around us, is one of the most important characteristics that go into being a great company. Rogers refers to, “being in an organizational relationship.”

When I think of relationships, of any kind, I think the most important value that needs to be contributed is truthful and constructive communication. Do not be afraid to explain what members of your team are doing wrong. Do not be afraid to provide constructive feedback. Individuals will only get so far if they are not provided truthful criticism to help shape their outcomes.

Being upfront, right off the bat, will help resolve potential conflicts that could occur down the line.

Organizational Strategy #5

“Let THEM Lead”

“Take your team, and let them drive,” Rogers explains. Those who feel empowered and capable, will go much further than those who feel limited.

Not only should you let your team lead, but you should also express your appreciation. Let them know that YOU SEE THEM! For example, I have started to show my appreciation towards my SHRM executive team members, by responding to their work with, “You’re the best!” and “I appreciate you more than you know!” I have already started to see a difference in the way they have developed their work. I truly believe once they see how much the rest of us value all they do for our organization, they feel that much more confident, resulting in better outcomes.

Organizational Strategy #6

“Become a CULTURE of Gratitude & Appreciation”

Rogers describes teams as having a “circle of protection.” We need to start finding the positives in situations and appreciate the various value teammates bring.

“Grass is not greener anywhere else, grass is greener where you water it,” a quote that I will never forget Rogers stated at the Iowa SHRM State Conference. A phrase that I commonly hear is, “The grass is greener on the other side.” However, Rogers makes a great point. Life is what you make it, just like a business becomes what its employees make of it. Finding a new job is not going to necessarily fix all of the problems you have within a company, but taking a step back to determine how you can fix the problem is going to get you a lot further.

Appreciate the challenges that you get the opportunity to take on, and make something great out of them.

Organizational Strategy #7

“LISTEN”

One of the hot topics that was discussed by each speaker that I listened to at the Iowa SHRM State Conference was listening. Most of us struggle to, “ask, shut up, and wait for it” in accordance to Rogers. Many of us tend to interrupt others and attempt to finish sentences by cutting off the person speaking.

We need to learn that a major part of communication, is listening to the other side. It is more important to take a minute to understand and learn from those around us who are sharing their thoughts.

Take each of these organizational strategies into consideration and begin to implement them. You will likely start to see your companies productivity increase, well-being increase, and better results.
