Hey everybody! This week, I am discussing conflicts in the workplace! Conflicts are disagreements that come from differences in opinions or perspectives. But are all conflicts bad? Absolutely not. Let’s discuss further…
There are two types of conflicts: constructive and deconstructive.
Constructive Conflicts
Constructive conflicts, according to Peaceful Leaders Academy, are “not about avoiding disagreements but embracing them with a solution-focused mindset.” These conflicts are beneficial ones. They help bring in other people’s perspectives you may not have thought about or considered. With these conflicts, all parties involved need to be willing to listen to the opposing perspective(s). Being able to listen to others can provide better problem solving solutions and better employee engagement.
Deconstructive Conflicts
Destructive conflicts, according to Relationship Between, “detracts from individual or group goals, characterized by negativity and a lack of resolution.” These conflicts can include personal criticism or avoidance. These conflicts can severely harm relationships or even damage employee performance.
Resolutions
The Muse provided many resolutions to conflicts. I picked the two that I thought were most important:
- Active Listening: Understanding every party’s perspective can make everyone’s opinion feel valued and heard. Being an active listener can increase productivity, create stronger relationships, and reduce misunderstandings.
- Collaboration: Encouraging teamwork/collaboration can help resolve conflicts faster. Being open to collaboration can create stronger relationships within the organization, as well. Teamwork and gathering different perspectives from each team member combined together can create one ideal solution.
