Week 3 Recap- Chargers at Steelers

Looking to keep their win streak alive, the Steelers hosted their home opener versus the Los Angeles Chargers, who also were looking to remain undefeated. Admittedly, I was initially worried about this game, knowing that a loss could ruin the moment that Pittsburgh had built up in their last 2 wins, especially being the first home game of the season. Although both Joey Bosa and Justin Herbert went down during this game, based on the way that the Steelers were playing I don’t think there was any way that they were going to let this game end as a loss. Between the consistency on the offensive side of the ball and the dominance of the defense, the Steelers looked better than they have in the last 2 years. The Steelers offense was more aggressive with their passing over the middle than they have been all year, which worked to their benefit in the fourth quarter when Justin Fields completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Austin III. Personally, I’m beginning to like watching the connection between Austin and Fields. Though George Pickens is the clear WR1, I think that Austin is beginning to warm up to some as a second option. Thanks to his quick movements and crazy speed, he’s able to create space from the defense and escape slower defenders with ease. Though he did have both a rushing and passing touchdown this week, Fields also threw his first interception of the season on Sunday. While trying to force a pass to Cordarrelle Patterson, Daiyan Henley made a play on the ball, and it was popped up in the air before being intercepted by former Steeler Bud Dupree. When asked about the interception, Fields took responsibility for the turnover, saying ” I just shouldn’t have thrown that ball” in an interview that can be found on the team’s YouTube channel. In that interview Fields goes on to admit he knew his other options and that he knows what to do moving forward, which is a great sign for Steelers fans. In my personal opinion, if Justin Fields continues to progress the way he has been recently and keeps playing well, he will be the Steelers’ next franchise quarterback.
