The Pittsburgh Steelers showcased a commanding performance on Sunday night, securing a 37-15 win over the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium. This victory was a much-needed win for both the fanbase and Mike Tomlin, who made the decision to start quarterback Russell Wilson for the first time this season.
Offensive Highlights
Although he did struggle in the first quarter, quarterback Russell Wilson led the charge with 264 passing yards and two touchdown passes. His seamless integration into the Steelers’ offense has been remarkable, considering how Justin Fields had led the team to a 4-2 record and gained the trust of his teammates. The connection between Wilson and George Pickens on Sunday night was extremely fun to watch. Wilson took the dangerous shots down the field that Justin Fields hadn’t throughout his first start, which not only gave the Steelers big offensive gains, but also opened up the run game for success.
The ground game was equally impressive, with running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren contributing significantly to the team’s success, Harris rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Standouts
The Steelers’ defense was relentless, limiting the Jets to just 15 points. The Steelers only tallied one sack during the game made by Larry Ogunjobi, but the biggest story of the night came from undrafted rookie corner Beanie Bishop Jr. who picked off Jets’ quarterback Aaron Roders twice.
The special teams unit also deserves a shoutout for their efforts, almost blocking one kick in the second (negated by penalty) and finally getting their hands on one, blocking a kick late in the third quarter. If you watched the game, you were sure to see special teams coach Danny Smith have more energy than any other 70 year old on the planet, smacking away at his gum and jumping around on the sideline with players.
Injury Updates
Despite the win, the Steelers are contending with injuries to key players.
Outside linebacker Nick Herbig and center Zach Frazier are expected to be out until the bye week.
Additionally, cornerback Donte Jackson and defensive tackle Montravius Adams left the game due to injuries, with their statuses pending further evaluation.
Looking Ahead
With a 5-2 record, the Steelers are set to face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football on October 28.
Given their recent performances, the team is optimistic about maintaining their momentum and addressing any challenges posed by injuries.
