Drop – A Surprising Blumhouse Thriller!

The Drop Positives

The new Blumhouse movie had many eyes on it with their stars Brandon Sklenar and Meghann Fahy. The movie did not disappoint with its switch from the usual jump scare horror movies the production company usually makes. The movie has surprisingly amazing cinemaphotography in the skyscraper restaurant, with gorgeous city shots before the narrative takes over.

The main actors also have good chemistry, and do a good job of making you care for the characters. They both express their own struggles slightly through the story, and nothing seems forced for the first 75% of the movie. By the midway part of the film you are really excited to see if he will give up on her, or keep sticking around despite her weird antics. The mystery on who is the one setting her up is not the most creative, but for a low budget movie keeps people interested.

The Negatives

The primary negative for the movie is its ending. The ending was not very satisfying, and was riddled in plot holes. From Violet somehow knowing the shooter was behind her friend while driving, to the antagonist being on camera lacing someone’s drink. The film falls into basic thriller tropes with a cheesy moment for the final kill. It feels more like a classic Blumhouse ending, rather than the new approach it was taking for the first three fourths of the movie.

The other issue was that the villain wasn’t very entertaining. He was very over the top, and decides after being caught to do the classic lame villain trope of explaining everything. It felt like the movie needed to wrap things up, and just started exposition dumping before the climax. The movie could have been a mid 6 to 7 rated movie, however the ending was severely disappointing from the rest of the film.

Rating 5.5/10
