The Monkey – An Abhorrent Adaptation

The Monkey Overview:

The Monkey is a new movie that adapts a story by the legendary Stephen King. However, this movie seems to miss on all accounts. This movie was directed by Oz Perkins, who made Longlegs last year. That movie was amazing at giving a new look on the horror genre. This movie plays into more of the same tropes for dark comedies.

Pros:

Sadly, The Monkey did not give very many positives. The best part of the movie was the acting performed by Theo James. He was truly putting in the work playing two twins, who both had significant screen time. Colin O’ Brien also played the son very well in the movie. Lastly, the kills were executed good. The kills were played more for comedic effect, and that wasn’t a terrible thing. They looked realistic, but sadly that’s where the pros end.

Cons:

The Monkey suffers from repetition. It plays into the joke of people dying in crazy ways that is becomes no longer funny. After about halfway through the movie, the jokes don’t seem to land. Some of the kills are so overtop the humor will really depend on what the viewer finds funny.

The Monkey also does not have a stable enough plot to flush the runtime. It covers the main theme of, “Everybody dies, that’s life,” and pushes it 90 minutes. It begins to drag about the 2nd half, as you just wait for the climax to finally arrive. The movie constantly moves in circles as more people die, and the main character just keeps trying to find this monkey. There could have been more focus on the characters, or the relationship between the son and father. However, it just ends up going to waste mostly and played for jokes. In the end, it just comes off as generic and not original.
