Foot and Ankle Strength For Dancers

Back to tap this week with Avril Lavigne’s What the Hell. A style like tap requires a significant foot and ankle strength. However, foot and ankle strength is essential for virtually every style of dance. Strong feet and ankles will reduce the risk of injury while dancing. Not only that, but strengthening the feet and ankles can help improve overall technique as well. It will also help with coordination and quick direction changes that may be required during movement. (yamishoes.com)

When preparing your ankles and feet to dance, make sure to start by paying them some extra attention during your regular warm up routine. Include movements that will stimulate the smaller muscles, such as hopping in place. You can also try a repeated sequence of pointing and stretching the foot. Once you’ve warmed up, taken your class, or performed, a cool down is just as important. Cool down the feet and ankles after physical activity by stretching areas such as the calves and Achilleas tendon. A proper cool down is also an effective way to build foot and ankle strength after dancing. (joandjax.com)
