Release Technique in Modern Dance

The song I chose to choreograph to this week is What Is It About the Night by Colton Avery. I wanted to create to the instrumental version of the song, and was able to find this particular version on YouTube (https://youtu.be/-sr4uTN4Twg?si=3tN6gX80U8Id-mx6). I ended up creating a phrase that demonstrates release technique within the style of modern dance.

Release technique is used to create a quality of movement commonly found in modern and contemporary dance styles. It’s created by releasing muscle tension and moving through breath while dancing, to create movement that is fluid and organic. When a dancer releases tension in the muscles, it allows for a greater range of motion and movements become more expressive. Using breath to motivate movement will help improve flow and control. The use of momentum is another important element to consider. This can be done by working with certain forces, such as gravity, to help guide movement, rather than hinder it. (rockstaracademy.com)

Release technique requires proper alignment. Engaging the core and neutralizing the spine will help. It is also important to make sure that the body is evenly distributing its weight. (dragonflydance.com)
