A Dynamic Warm Up Routine’s Importance

Hot n Cold by Katy Perry inspired this week’s choreography, for an upbeat, dance-team-style phrase. With a song like “Hot n Cold,” it seemed appropriate to discuss “warming up” and “cooling” down before and after dancing. If you’re on a dance team, cheer team, or participate in any sport or physical activity, a proper warm up is crucial for keeping your muscles safe and ready to perform. A dynamic warm up is the key.

Dancewear Corner describes the difference between static and dynamic stretching, in an article titled “Dynamic vs. Static Stretching: The Difference For Dancers.” Static stretching occurs when the stretch is held still for more than a few seconds. In contrast, dynamic stretching keeps the body moving while activating and engaging the muscles. While static stretching is beneficial for lengthening the muscles and cooling down the body post-work out, a dynamic warm up helps raise body temperature and get blood to the muscles before demanding physical activity. By warming up your muscles in this way before dance or exercise, it protects them by helping to prevent injury. It’s important to warm up properly for safe and effective movement.
