Staying Grounded: How Lucas Moore Keeps His Focus On and Off the Field

By: Isabella Areyano

I had the privilege of speaking with one of Louisville Baseball’s standout outfielders, Lucas Moore.

For Lucas, baseball has always been a part of his life, but he recalls getting serious about the sport around the age of 10. By the time he was in 8th grade, he knew he wanted to play at the collegiate level. While growing up, Lucas also played basketball and football, taking on the role of a slot receiver until his junior year of high school. However, after that, he made the decision to focus solely on baseball, recognizing that it was the sport where his true talent lay. Interestingly, football was his favorite sport to play and watch, but he knew baseball was where his future would take him. Reflecting on his younger years, Lucas admits that his love for baseball didn’t fully blossom until later, partly because of the pressure his father placed on him. As he’s matured, though, he’s learned to enjoy the game without taking it too seriously.

Throughout his journey, Lucas credits his mom for being his biggest supporter, driving all over the country to watch him play. No matter how hectic his schedule gets, seeing her in the stands is a constant source of joy.

“It gives me some juice before a game,” Lucas said. “Especially in the Spring when games are constant. It’s a grind, but seeing her there is something I always look forward to.”

When asked how he stays grounded through the ups and downs of baseball, Lucas emphasized the importance of mental strength, explaining that it’s just as crucial as physical training.

“Baseball is ridiculously hard. If you let your mind get consumed by the struggle, it makes everything tougher.”

Lucas expressed immense gratitude toward his high school coach, who introduced him to the mental side of the game. His coach would play the podcast Mental Performance Daily, which helped him learn to focus and stay present. This mindset has shaped how Lucas approaches the game, helping him play “loose” and “free.” For the past two years, he’s focused on controlling his emotions, striving to maintain a steady composure regardless of whether he’s having the best game of his life or a tough day on the field.

“An average fan shouldn’t be able to tell if I’m 4 for 4 with doubles or 0 for 4 with strikeouts. I’m always laser-focused. The moment emotions take over, that’s when things start to go wrong.”

As we discussed winning and losing, Lucas revealed that he’s always been a hyper competitive individual, no matter what the game is.

“Like I will actually beat my little brother up over a game of cornhole at home,” he joked.

Though Lucas admits that he’s always been a sore loser, his approach to losing has evolved. He no longer sees losses as failures but as opportunities to learn and grow.

“Losing sucks. When we lose, I hate it. I get really frustrated for a little bit, but my turnaround time has gotten a lot better.”

Recently, Lucas started keeping a journal to reflect on his performances, noting what went well and what needs improvement. This practice helps him stay focused and confident, knowing he’s constantly working to get better.

“After a loss, I think, ‘What actually happened to make us lose? What can we do better tomorrow?’ You have to clear it and lock back in. If you’re stuck on yesterday’s loss, you won’t perform today.”

Despite the pressures of collegiate baseball, Lucas keeps it all in perspective.

“If you take baseball too seriously, it’ll beat you down for sure. It’s a brutal sport, and it’s hard, so I try to not take it too seriously. At the end of the day we’re just playing a game.”

Outside of baseball, Lucas describes himself as a regular guy who enjoys the simple things.

“My life outside of baseball isn’t that exciting. I like watching movies, eating as much as I can, listening to EDM music, and hanging out with my friends.”

To conclude the interview, I asked Lucas to share something he wishes more people knew about him. His response was both sweet and genuine:

“I love my mom and my dog.”
