Early packaging had a straightforward purpose: to protect and store food and essential goods. The Egyptians and Greeks were among the first to use glass containers for oils and perfumes, while clay pots and amphorae stored wine and grains.
The invention of paper and cardboard enabled mass production of containers and boxes, making it possible to package goods in standard quantities. In the late 1800s, lithographic printing allowed manufacturers to add color to labels, setting the stage for packaging as a medium for branding and advertising.
By the 1970s, awareness of environmental issues influenced packaging practices. Concerns about landfill waste and the environmental impact of plastics led to the development of recycling initiatives and eco-friendly materials.
