Do you feel like your closet is a pile that continues to build, yet you think you have nothing to wear? This means it’s time for a closet clean-out and refresh. Your closet should be cleaned out at least twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring. It’s very common to feel overwhelmed by the thought of this, but with these simple steps, you can accomplish a wardrobe that works for you. There is great significance in letting go of fashions that you do not reach for and finding items that bring you joy. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Empty Your Closet
The first step in completing a closet clean-out is to take every garment out of your closet. Make a pile of all your clothing.
Step 2: Sort clothing into 3 Piles
Next in your closet clean out, you are going to pick up every single piece of clothing and sort them into three piles.
- There is a yes pile for merchandise that you confidently know you will/do wear.
- Secondly, is the no pile, which is items that may not fit, don’t exemplify your new style, or you simply do not want anymore. A great reccomendation would be to donate these items to shelters or local organizations. Also, you could sell them online.
- The third pile of clothes is the maybe items, which are items you’re not sure whether to keep or not. For most people, this can be the most challenging step, but follow along to make the task simpler. You should try on these uncertain items and ask yourself, “If I were to see this in a store today, would I buy the item?” Also, question yourself if you can see yourself wearing the item within the next year. This will help determine if you should keep the item. For more information, read about Marie Kondo’s way of decluttering a closet. She focuses a lot on assessing whether an item brings you joy or not.
Rule of Three: Another way to assess your maybe pile of clothing is to imagine yourself wearing the garment in 3 different ways. Can you style the item in 3 different ways realistically? From here, if you are still unsure about an item, you can place these questionable items in a box. Keep the box for a year and see if you ever reach for the specific items. After a year, if you do not wear something, the item might be something you no longer need.
Step 3: Organize Clothing
Once you reach step three in your closet clean-out, the hardest work is done! Now, you can put all your yes fashion items back into your closet. Arrange your clothing into your closet in a neat and organized way by color and type. This helps build styling inspiration and assists you in being able to see all the items you have.
Accomplishing a closet clean-out twice a year is very useful in maintaining a refreshed selection of clothing. People’s styles change; therefore, it’s important to ensure you like the items in your closet. Your closet should be filled with clothing that you want to wear and that brings you joy.
