Let’s talk about women’s fashion trends from the past that are back and trending today! Have you ever encountered someone pointing at a fashion style and saying, “Wow, I used to wear this when I was younger”? This is a ubiquitous statement, as trends are always evolving because of the fashion cycle. Fashion trends are seen to reappear about every 20 years when younger generations discover these styles that are new to them. Now, let’s take a look at a few of these fashion trends from the past that are being worn and bought by consumers today. I can’t discuss them all, but here are a few of my favorite trends from the past!
Leather Jackets
First, starting with leather jackets, trending from the 1920s- 1950s, and again today. According to Hooks Magazine, leather jackets are back in full force acting as a fashion staple. In today’s world, leather jackets are being worn oversized, adding a hint of refinement. Leather jackets can be styled with various outfits to create anywhere between a casual or luxurious look. I really do love adding a leather jacket to my outfits! They add another element to my outfit, whether that’s to blend a look or make a statement.
You can style a leather jacket with many different outfits, with one idea being denim blue jeans and a fitted tee. The jacket, in this case, adds warmth and a unique dimension. I think this is one of the easiest and most common ways to style a leather jacket. Another idea would be to pair the jacket with a professional business outfit to dress up a look. On the other hand, you can also add leather to a casual outfit with leggings or sweatpants. Leather jackets are versatile and can be styled in a variety of ways to create your own exciting fashion look! No wonder they are back from the past!

Wide Leg jeans and Cargo Pants
Next, wide-leg jeans are another popular fashion item that was trending in the 90s, according to TheDailyStar. For a moment in time, people were purchasing skinny jeans, but they were quickly replaced with the return of wide legs. I love wide-leg jeans because they are comfortable and stylish. My go-to is pairing light blue wide-leg jeans with a fitted tee. This style of jeans is a great staple piece in a wardrobe because they can be paired with a lot of different tops. A very trendy way that wide legs are styled is with a graphic tee because they complement each other nicely.
With that, cargo pants are another trendy woman’s bottom, as stated by Business Insider. Cargo pants were booming in the 50s and yet again today. Their intricate design can make an outfit very appealing to look at. I style my cargo pants with some sneakers and a plain top. In this case, the pants are the focal point and where attention should be drawn to. I am happy to see cargo pants back in style because they are such a powerful fashion.
Lace & Corsets
The lace trend is taking off as designers are incorporating lace into several fashion looks, as demonstrated in an article by Good Housekeeping. Lace was a popular fabric in the late sixteenth century and has been featured again on models in current runway shows. Trendy brands are selling merchandise with lace trim and accents that elevate the item. Lace is a very elegant and versatile fabric, often in women’s tops or dresses. I have a few lace tops that I like to wear for more fancy events, with jeans and cargos. Also, I do have satin dresses with lace trim that are great for a luxurious, graceful feel. Lace is a trend from the past and present as many lace clothing items can be found in stores.
Lace corsets are very trendy in today’s fashion stores and worn by icons. The corset style goes way back to the 16th century. They shaped an hourglass figure and were known for their structure. Today, corsets are a popular fashion piece and still create a desired silhouette. More specifically, lace corsets are very commonly seen and worn by women. They can typically be paired with jeans and cargo pants. Corsets are a unique fashion and I think it’s fascinating to see this fashion trend from the past in stores and being admired.

Graphic mini Tee
Another trend from the past, specifically the 1960s and 1970s is bold graphic tees, mentioned by InStyle. Today, whether they are mini-fitted graphic tees or oversized, they are very trendy. Graphic clothing can add a lot of attitude and individuality to an outfit depending on the slogan or words displayed on the fabric. I love that this trend is back and an easy way to add your own style to an outfit. Mini tees look fantastic when paired with a mini skirt, baggy denim jeans, sweatpants, and sneakers. The consumer can decide how much they want to dress up a graphic tee. They are affordable pieces to add to your wardrobe that add a lot of joy. In previous years, oversized graphic tees were very trendy, but I think recently, fitted mini tees are taking their place. Mini tees add humor, color, and a sense of style to fashion!
Trends in fashion are always changing because of the surrounding world and the values of consumers. I am always thrilled to see what fashion trends from the past are once again being sold in stores. Items like leather jackets, wide-leg jeans, and cargo pants are a few of my favorite recurring trends. Hopefully, as a consumer, you can point out a few of these fashion trends from the past and style them, or maybe you already were part of the society that is causing these items from the past to be trendy!
