Area rugs are a fantastic way to add warmth, style, and comfort to any room! But with so many options available, it can be challenging to know where to place them, what size to choose, and which fiber (material) will best suit your needs. In this guide, we’ll explore these aspects to help you make an informed decision so you’re not wasting your time or money when choosing a rug!
Rules of Thumb for Placing Rugs
The placement of an area rug can significantly impact the look and feel of a room. In the living room, a good rule of thumb is to place the rug under the front legs of your sofa and chairs. This will create a “boundary” and will clearly outline the seating area. For dining rooms, make sure the rug is large enough to accommodate the table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. In bedrooms, placing a rug under the bed can add a touch of luxury, bonus points for keeping your feet warm in the mornings! Hallways and entryways also benefit from runners, which can protect your flooring and add a welcoming touch.
How Much Area Should My Area Rug Cover?
Choosing the right size rug is crucial for achieving the desired effect. In living rooms, a rug that is too small can make the space feel disjointed, while one that is too large can overwhelm the room. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 18 inches of bare floor around the rug’s edges. For dining rooms, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides to allow for chairs to move in and out comfortably. In bedrooms, a rug should extend at least 18-24 inches beyond the sides of the bed, however, it’s even better if it extends 6-12 inches past your nightstands. For hallways, ensure the runner is long enough to cover the majority of the space but leaves a few inches of flooring visible on all sides.
Choosing Rug Fibers
When it comes to selecting the fiber for your area rug, we should consider both durability and comfort. Wool is a popular choice due to its softness, durability, and natural stain resistance. It’s ideal for high-traffic areas like living rooms and hallways. Synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester are also durable and often more affordable, making them a good option if you’re on a budget! For a luxurious feel, consider silk or a silk blend, though these are best suited for low-traffic areas due to their delicacy. Natural fibers like jute and sisal offer a rustic look and are environmentally friendly, but they can be less comfortable underfoot, consider these for your outdoor living space!
By considering these factors, you can choose an area rug that not only enhances the aesthetic of your space but also meets your practical needs. Good luck with the search for your rug!
