The 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs have already delivered some wild finishes—and Round 2 is shaping up to be even better. With most matchups set and two crucial Game 7s on the horizon, here’s a look at where things stand heading into a loaded second round.
Stanley Cup Matchups (Eastern)
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals
Both teams advanced after closing out their first-round series in five games. Carolina’s Sebastian Aho and Washington’s Dylan Strome have led the charge offensively. This series could be one of the best of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, between two squads with dynamic forward groups and steady goaltending.
They split their regular-season series 2-2, but I think the Hurricanes have the edge in puck control and depth. Don’t be surprised if they pull off what some might call an upset.
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers
Toronto got past the Ottawa Senators in six, while Florida knocked out Tampa Bay in just five. This matchup is a rematch from two years ago, and it has all the ingredients for a back-and-forth battle.
Auston Matthews continues to be a force, and Sam Reinhart is playing some of his best hockey for the Panthers. I’m calling this one close—but I like the Leafs to pull off a tight series win and take down last year’s champs.
Western Matchups
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Edmonton Oilers
Vegas took care the Minnesota Wild in six games, and Edmonton rallied from a 2-0 deficit to eliminate the Los Angeles Kings in six. Expect a high-octane series featuring stars like Jack Eichel for Vegas and Connor McDavid for Edmonton. Even though the Oilers made it to the finals last year, I don’t think they have enough to beat the Golden Knights.
Pending Playoffs Round 2 Matchups
The Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche are tied 3-3, with Game 7 determining who advances. The winner will face the victor of the Winnipeg Jets vs. St. Louis Blues series, also tied 3-3. Both Game 7s are scheduled for May 4.
